Alabama Passport Offices – How to Get a Passport in Alabama

Getting a passport in Alabama can be very easy. Nevertheless, there can be complications along the way. First, where can you go to get a passport? Passport offices are in different locations. Most are found in post offices. Others are in the courthouse, county clerk offices, or even libraries. Regardless of their sites, the process to obtain a passport does not change.

During the process, most passport facilities require an appointment. For the ones that do not, walk-ins are accepted. Also, before visiting any office make sure all the documents are complete and the individual or individuals are present when submitting the passport application form.

Submitting a passport application via any of these offices will take 4 to 6 weeks for it to process mailing it to you. Other services are available that may decrease the processing time. However, these services will increase the passport processing fees.

REAL ID Act of 2005

Due to the event on September 11, 2001, security has become the primary concern for all US citizens. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) suggested that all states must have the same form security. For this reason, the birth of the REAL ID Act begun.  In 2005, Congress passed into Law the REAL ID Act which suggested all states must have minimum security standards on all government-issued identifications.

On each ID, the following information must be present:

  • Full legal name
  • Residential address
  • Birthdate
  • Gender
  • Driver’s license or identification card number
  • Digital front-facing photograph
  • Signature

For the fact that each state will incur the cost of implementing the REAL ID Act, many are not ready to introduce the new law. The ones that are not in compliant may be under review or given an extension. The ones under review have until January 22, 2018, to start with the new law or get an extension.

However, Alabama is compliant with the REAL ID Act. What does that mean? Well, Alabama issued state ids have the required information on them set by DHS. So if you recently obtained an id, you will not have any problems at airports. Keep in mind that you can use your id to travel domestically but will need a passport for international travels.

If your passport is near expiration(6 months or less validity) or expired, you should apply for one way in advance before planning your trip. But if you have an emergency and must travel abroad soon, you can use an expediter to help with submitting your documents and getting a passport for you. Additional fees are necessary for this service.
