Maine Passport Offices – Where to submit a passport application in Maine

Getting a passport is necessary if you plan to leave the country for a vacation or an emergency. Maine Passport Offices are in many different locations across the state and will help with the application process. One of many acceptance sites is the post office. At the post office, a certified agent will assist you with submitting all the necessary documents and fees.

Other facilities include courthouses, county clerk’s offices, and public libraries. At these places, the process and fees are the same as every post offices.

The standard time it takes to process an application is 4-6 weeks before getting it in the mail. Another option, expedited service, is offered as well. It decreases the processing time by half. If you need a passport sooner than four weeks, this service is what you will need. Proof of departure date is necessary for processing. Also, the fees are more for this service. Expedited Passport Services in Maine

In Maine, other agencies offer expedited services as well. Their services are similar to the post office where you can have a passport in 2-3 weeks. However, you can get a passport in 24-72 hours if you have an emergency. In this case, the expeditor hires a passport agency that has the authority to offer the document in 24 hours. To get a passport that quick, you must provide proof of an emergency.

To get the location of a passport agency, you must call the National Passport Center hotline toll free number at (877) 487-2778. You will get an appointment to meet an agent and present your documents. A meeting is required since these agencies are in Federal Buildings. REAL ID Act of 2005

The REAL ID Act affects anyone who uses a state-issued ID card or driver’s license as identification at airports to board a plane. This law, according to Congress, establishes a set of security features on state-issued ID cards and driver’s licenses. Some states were in agreement to implement this law and did just that. Others did not and now have until October 10, 2018, to comply. The entire US, including its territories, must be compliant by October 1, 2020. If not, state-issued ID cards and driver’s licenses from noncompliant states will not be accepted by TSA at airports.

Currently, TSA website has some alternative documents you may use as a substitute. Here is a list of a few from the list:

  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
  • Permanent resident card
  • HSPD-12 PIV card

If you already possess one of these documents and it is in good standing, there is no need to apply for another. If not, the best advice would be to apply for a passport book. An adult passport book is valid for ten years and a minor, someone younger than 16 years, is valid for five years. Also, a passport book is used to travel inside the US and outside the country as well.

If at some point you will need a passport, below is a list of some acceptance facilities all across Maine. You can visit any location and submit your forms.
