South Carolina Passport Offices – How to get a passport in S. Carolina

South Carolina Passport Offices are located all over the state. The most convenient place to find one is in a post office. Other areas would be the courthouse, county clerk’s office, and the public library. At all these sites, agents are trained and certified to take your application, and payment they send it to a processing center. If you are not sure what forms to use, you can always contact a site and asked for going to one. Some do require an appointment, so call the office before going.

The average processing time is 4-6 weeks. So, if you need a passport sooner, some post offices offer expedited service. You should ask about this before assuming it is available at the one you may visit. For this service, the cost is more than the usual processing cost. See below for some passport offices in cities across South Carolina.

Expedited Services

Expediting your passport applications is a possibility if you need it sooner than four weeks. Getting a passport sooner than four weeks is what an expedited servicer will do for you. But first, you must provide proof that you need your document that fast. An itinerary with proof of travel is required as proof. Once all the materials and fees are obtained, the application is rushed, and you can have your new passport in about 2-3 weeks.

If you have an emergency that requires you leave immediately, you can use a passport agency to get a passport in as little as 24 hours. To locate one, you must call the National Passport Center at (877) 487-2778 to request an appointment. Since these agencies are in Federal Buildings, you will not be seen without an interview. The Passport Center will also give the location of the nearest agency. Not every state has one, so you may need to go to another. The nearest passport agency to South Carolina is in Atlanta. REAL ID Act of 2005

The REAL ID Act will soon be fully enforced, and this law will affect flyers who use a state-issued ID card or driver’s license at the airport. According to legislation passed by Congress, all state-issued ID cards and driver’s licenses must have standard security features otherwise will be invalid. The deadline for this to be done is set for October 10, 2018. TSA has created a list of alternative documents on its website. Here are some of them from the site:

  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
  • Permanent resident card
  • HSPD-12 PIV card

If you already possess one, you can use it to fly at any airport. The most convenient document to have would be a passport. With a passport, you will be able to travel domestic, as well as international. If you don’t have a passport, need to renew your old passport, or need to replace a lost one, now is the right time to do so. By having a passport, you will eliminate a lot of problems that may arise in the future.
